Office Supplies Staples
Staples are the overlooked cornerstone of all office work. Let's face it, without staples, we'd all come apart! Ok, all horribly corny joking aside, staples really are an important part of any office. We take them for granted but use them non-stop throughout each and every day. They keep our reports together, they keep our lists together, they keep our files from flying apart into a confusing mess of tangled nonsense. Yes, staples are very important. Not to mention the fact that if you use the wrong kind of staples, you can ruin your expensive stapler!
Here you will find reviews of most of the major brands of staples in use today in most offices, as well as a breakdown and discussion of the different types of staples and when as well as where you should use each specific type of staple. If there's a question you have about staples that you can't find the answer to here, well, you just aren't trying hard enough! So sit back and enjoy the wonderful world of staples!
Types of Staples: There are many different types of staples on the market today, and which kind of staple you use depends almost entirely on what you need to staple. The standard staple, which I suppose is where we really ought to start, is usually one fourth of an inch thick and usually comes in a box of five thousand, full strip. A generic standard staple of the Office Depot, Office Max, or Staples (no pun intended!) brand of five thousand can generally run you between two and three dollars but often they sell them in groups of three to five boxes (with each box containing five thousands staples). These bulk boxes are often cheaper than if you bought the same number of individual boxes. Staples usually refer to twenty pound paper as the paper of record. Capacity is stated in number of sheets that a staple can handle, and range from two to twenty sheet staple-able, twenty to twenty five staple-able, thirty sheet staple-able, up to one hundred sheet staple-able or more.
Brands of Staples: There are generally two categories of brands. On one hand you have the generic store brands like Office Depot staples, Office Max staples, Staples staples, and probably even a Wal-Mart brand. These staples are ok for every day use in your average stapler. If you bind lots of documents at once, you may opt for a little higher quality brand of staple. The second category is your brand name staple. Brand names include Swingline, Stanley Bostitch, Paper Pro, Rapid, and Optima among others. Expect to pay a little more for brand name staples in most cases, but not all. Stanley Bostitch standard staples can often be found cheaper than generic brands, you just have to look around and find a deal.
Which brand and type of staple should you use? That's really up to you! I can tell you though from my own experiences, that there's nothing more frustrating than finishing up a long report and printing it up, only to have your stapler bind up on you and tear or smudge your report so that you have to reprint the whole thing again. Investing a little in stronger, sharper staples can often be worth it just in convenience alone!
